GAIA Wines was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos. They own two modern wineries that are located in two of the most interesting and promising P.D.O. areas of Greece, Nemea in Peloponnese and Santorini. Gaia’s main aim is to present the potential of the indigenous Greek grape varieties in the wine enthusiasts worldwide. They produce wine with the highhest degree of quality in mind, in honour of those that show trust in them.
Santorini has a unique terroir that is acclaimed worldwide. The volcanic, porous soil, the long hours of sunshine, the lack of rainfall throughout the year, the sea mist and the strong winds during summer, not to mention the traditional "kouloura" (basket shape) training system. Combiine this with the 3,000 years old, low-yield, self-rooted, poor in organic matter vineyard which has never been affected by phylloxera and we see one of the noblest white grape varieties in the Mediterranean, the indigenous Assyrtiko, which creates rare, precious and unique wines. The winery is situated on a beach, on the east side of the island, between Kamari and Monolithos settlements. This industrial stone building used to be a tomato factory, but has since been given new life through wine-making. Today, the high-tech equipment and the cutting edge facilities of our winery guarantee contemporary winemaking and ideal conditions for high quality production.
