Sugrue Pierre is the personal project of celebrated English Sparkling Winemaker Dermot Sugrue.
Sugrue has been the winemaker behind many of England's best sparkling wines over the last 10 years. Previously the winemaker at Nyetimber, he left in 2006 to establish the Wiston Estate Winery with the Gorings of West Sussex. The same year he also planted a 1 hectare vineyard in Sorrington which has been in full production since 2009.
At Wiston, Sugrue makes sparkling wines under contract for several leading vineyards. Working with over 15 clients allows his access to some of the best fruit each year and the result, when combined with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from the excellent site at Storrington, is SUGRUE-PIERRE.
The 2009 Sugrue-Pierre is 60% Chardonnay and 405 Pinot Noir from what was an exceptional vintage. A small proportion of the wine was fermented and aged briefly in oak with the remainder in stainless steel with full malolactic conversion. A traditional Coquard press was used, and after bottling without filtration the wine rests on its lees for between 2 and 3 years before disgorging with 8 grammes per litre of dosage.
