It was in 1998 that a group of businessmen from the world of wine decided to create a new winery. This new bodega emerged and started to produce high quality wines at a reasonable price. At first the bodega desided to produce reserva wines and gran reserva wines, since reserva is the wine of choice of wine enthusiasts and traditional winemakers used to keep for their best visitors. However, the original goal had always been to offer more everyday wines with good inherent quality at a reasonable price, combining the best of the tradition inherent to a world renowned wine region like Rioja with all the possibilities that modern technology offered. The goal is to make the most of a characterful wines from the local and noble grape of Tempranillo.
Located in Fuenmayor (Rioja Alta), Bodegas Altanza was built in a 35.000 m2 area leaving 10.000 m2 for a magnificent French garden. Bodegas Altanza has a room that keeps no less than 8,500 barrels of 225 liters size. 90% of their barrels are French oak and 10% is American oak. In the last few years they decided to use exclusively French oak as they consider it is more elegant oak that transfers smooth aromas to the wine without covering all the fruity aromas of the Tempranillo grape, we agree!
